New Music Industry Books

March 22nd, 2011 by LIPA LRC

We have a number of new and interesting books on the music industry, useful for musicians and MTEMs alike. The Tour Book is written by Andy Reynolds who has worked as an international concert tour manager for artists ranging from the Super Furry Animals to Whitney Houston, and has lectured at Liverpool Uni. The Tour Book covers all aspects of touring, from contracts, riders and marketing, to the practicalities of selecting equipment and sound checking.  Focusing on UK independent labels we have two new books, An intimate history of Rough Trade by Neil Taylor and Independence days: the story of UK independent record labels by Alex Ogg. Both books look in depth at independent labels from their roots in the 1970s through to the present day, and consider what the future holds.

In Peer to peer and the music industry author Matthew David asks whether the music and movie industries have lost the battle to criminalize downloading. Fusing knowledge of the music industry, technology, markets and intellectual property the book is described as ‘a landmark work in the sociology of popular culture and cultural criminology’.  Legal aspects of the music industry are covered in greater detail in Allen Bargfrede’s Music law in the digital age and Rich Stim’s Music law: how to run your band’s business. These recently published titles are two of the most up to date books on this fast changing topic, but bear in mind, both are US publications.

Love him or loathe him there’s no denying Simon Cowell has had a huge affect on the music industry. The LRC has two new books on the man himself, Simon Cowell: the man who changed the world by David Nolan is a straightforward biography, while The Unauthorized guide to doing business the Simon Cowell way by Trevor Clawson looks at Cowell’s unique approach to business. It includes insights into Cowell’s technique of ‘harnessing the crowd’, developing international formats, using new media and working with partners to achieve success. This book is part of a series which includes titles on Sir Alan Sugar and Bill Gates, both are also available in the LRC.

For a general overview of the music industry the LRC has three new titles. The Music business and recording industry by Geoffrey Hull, What they’ll never tell you about the music business by Peter M. Thall and Music business: the key concepts by Richard Strasser.  If you’re aiming to protect or profit from your music copyrights then the recently published The Plain and simple guide to music publishing may be the book for you. Although again this is a US publication (there’s very little published on the topic at all) it includes chapters on areas such as royalties, 360 deals and licensing.

Hope you find these new books useful, remember to let us know if you have any suggestions for stock.

Bye! LRC

Desktop DJ (Formerly Music Library)

February 1st, 2011 by LIPA LRC

Music Streaming with Desktop DJOur music streaming service ‘Music Library’ has undergone a rebrand and is now known as Desktop DJ. It looks much nicer and is clearer to use so why not try it out?

www.lipa.ac.uk/desktopdj

Desktop DJ contains every UK Top 40 hit since the charts began in November 1952. It also includes the US Hits 100 and further substantial quantities of pop, jazz, country, film soundtracks, stage shows and classical music. It’s regularly updated with new releases so you’re sure to find something good to listen to!  Desktop DJ is a streaming service, much like Spotify, so while you can listen to as much music as you like, you can’t download it. It is accessible from LIPA computers, or laptops connected to LIPA WiFi.
